Mckee is a true depth psychologist-probably the reason for his passion for bergman.reference to medieval thought can be synthesized into one modern figure: carl Jung.  perhaps Mckee and Jung share the same project: curing the soul, which would mean understanding it-in terms of analysis or storytelling-is there really a difference? But what is important to recognize is this: the inner life is a life.it is alive and kicking, what the medievalists recognized with such terms as "incorporeal realities".I think Mckee is asking us that the job of storytelling is the commitment of self analysis: recognize your inner world-respect it, value it because its as real-even more so -than the supposed outer world. Also, 'need' and 'desire' and 'unconsciousness' may also be recognized as that which is most intensive and compelling-what feature of ones being is most highlighted. In the inner world, the most clear feature is also the most intensive..What moves us most inside is our clarity..Its also called our being, and is what Nietzsche meant when he recognized ontology to be nothing else than 'drama'
Francesco: need vs. subconscience desire

the example of leo in blood diamond doesn't make sense to me.

I feel like Leo had more of a "need" to be selfless rather than it being a subconscience desire. we never really see him do anything else in the movie that's selfless. although it's been awhile since i've seen it and i could be wrong.

this need and subconscience desire thing is really confusing me now.

if desire exists outside of the person, than the Leo in blood diamond character example makes no sense because him being selfless is a personal quality that's INSIDE of him, isn't that more of a need, since need is something that is missing form INSIDE of the character?

I am finding that the subconscious need and desire seem a little interchangeable. is that just because they are both unknown or am I missing something here? ie rocky why is his subconscious want not to have sef respect, self love extra. You could go on to say that the early scene where he is a bone breaker and gives the man more time to pay expresses his unconscious desire to see himself in a way he could respect. Why does this have to be a need, what is the subtle difference or are they just shades of the same color?

Your lessons give me a growing understanding and appreciation for the "intrinsic."  For far too long I had drunk the "extrinsic" punch.

Thanks! No one else has ever explained the difference of desire and need so clearly.  Off to re-write!

Regarding Middlesex by Jeffery Eugenides. Asked about the book in March at the LA seminar. Glad to hear comments and insights about the story now via the platform on desire and need. Would love to hear more about observations regarding The Amazing Adventures of of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon. Thanks for this. What a mind!
