Clearly people have ideas of themselves that are acted out in reality, and these patterns appear to be dominant and understandable forms of interpersonal relations..On the other hand, these 'games'and stories are also cliches and one may add, defensive. As Berne said, "games are the intermediate zone between distance and intimacy. We play them because we fear both intimacy and estrangement. (a crude golden mean of mediocrity). In a sense, mr Mckees notion of an outer antagonism (the actual world) may be the medicine to overcome neurotic self conceptions which disguise-not reveal- ones true/authentic self
