Yes, education!! Kevin Spacey's character learns to see the beauty of the world around him (and so does the viewer). And finally, finally (he's slow) he sees the inner beauty of Mina Suvari's character, which lets him see the beauty in caring for another (young, vulnerable) human being instead of using or exploiting her...he wraps her in a blanket, as an adult should, and I think he offers her a sandwich. If he had only had this insight earlier, he might not have thrown away his chance at a more meaningful life all along. The genre can be seen as tragedy, classical tragedy in the best sense, because he does see before his tragic ending, he changes, and the audience experiences catharthis, and...well, one of my all-time fave movies.
