This is most helpful, thank you, Robert. The line between bringing subtext up and keeping it below the surface, thus allowing the reader or audience to see through to what is really happening below the surface, could then be a very fine line indeed in novels, I think, where there is more scope for writing to show the character's private self ... so I guess with a novel the thing is to take care that the protagonist is not aware of their unknown self, even though there are dimensions of conflict between layers of self which may confound the character ... until that moment that they are under pressure and the unknown self comes to the fore. Did you say at the seminar that this was harder than brain surgery, Robert?? :))
