Blake Snyder's Save The Cat doesn't advocate using cheap devices to create empathy for a protagonist. In fact, Snyder and McKee have very similar views on interest/empathy. Snyder's discussion of save the cat in Pulp Fiction is similar to McKee's discussion of center of the good in Silence Of The Lambs.

BTW: I agree with Trish on Hannibal's save the cat moment.

When Agent Starling is defiled by Miggs, Hannibal offers her a towel, and then he manipulates Miggs into suicide. While definitely not a nice thing to do... it still has some sort of twisted protector/justice figure quality that is unexpected.
