Does starting a novel in the present time and then going back to an earlier period add more complications than necessary to crafting a novel?  Thank you

I have always found willing suspension of disbelief to be a great tool for enjoying a movie. but now I'm finding that it's also an essential tool for living in the modern world. is that what they call life imitating art?
