Great Q & A.  It described one of the reasons why I like Dirk Pitt Adventures, a Cussler micro-genre, series convention of how each story gets incited. 

A plucky fair maiden getting herself in a whole lotta trouble.  A N.U.M.A. vessel nearby.  A rigged dude with "Opaline green eyes."  By page 12 and a half, I kiss that night's sleep "sayonara!"
