The VO in Goodfellas is one of the best examples I think. But then Nicholas Pileggi had great material to work with. In the commentary track he says that he more or less just "edited" the things that the real crooks told him. I guess he is too humble though, beacuase all dialogue in that movie is brilliant. Anyways, that's great VO.

There's a good example of voice-over in THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. In that movie, the protagonist, the character who is essentially 'redeemed', is Red (Morgan Freeman). However, his story is extremely internal and passive, and so the voice-over puts the movie through Red's POV over Dufresne's (Tim Robbins) incredible adventure ensuring that Red isn't cast aside, but instead, draws the audience's empathy.

This is an excellent lesson on how to properly use voice overs. It is so much easier writing voice over (first person) in prose than in cinema.
