I think that this goes back to the basic question are you writing for the market or for yourself... and that question has been answered here at Storylogue. I like Mr. McKee's solution of writing her in a novel.

Mr McKee, this is the first time I have been even remotely tempted to challenge anything you've said. However, I have to ask why you believe that movies about women are so hard to sell? Including, increasingly, women past a certain age. Meryl Streep is a bit past 60, and I see no shortage of roles for her. Same goes for Shirley MacLaine, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, and loads of other stars way past 40. Their films are far from box-office failures. So--please, sir--will you elaborate? 

So, the trick to writing a screenplay about a woman... is to do it TWICE. In two different mediums.
