sunbird1942: Why can't characters change?

Why can't characters change over a period of time without destroying the premise of the series - TV or novels? It seems to me the changes bring new challenges to the writer and new plots to the story.

In the Sharpe novels by Cornwell, Sharpe is always a man of action. However, as his story progresses, rough edges are knocked off by his experiences, changes are made and his character grows.
