I understand that principles and not rules are the priority, but those works that defy are fascinating to discuss. Works I’ve mentioned previously like the Tree of Life by Terrence Malick (tedium sets in when the writer waxes poetic) and Martin’s books so lengthy and alienating that they don’t work for many of us. They don’t “work or not work.” They have staunch love or hate camps on each side more than just the typical associated with any work.  Many people don’t keep turning the page and many are pissed once they see The Tree of Life.  It’s interesting. I don’t understand the phenom when so many bail on them.
