I saw Adaptation after reading Story, but before ever seeing a video clip of Robert speaking. I knew Kaufman's depiction of him was not realistic, and I've been watching these clips waiting for him to show any sign of the vulgarity in Kaufman's McKee, and all I have seen so far is total eloquence. OMFG, Mr. Mckee, you have such a wonderful way of putting things, and I love finally seeing the expression on your face when you speak, especially when you say things like "...I taste good, oh so very, very good..." I laughed so hard I had to stop the clip.

...don't know whether it's my pc, but various videos (including this one), stall when buffering...

Amazing!!! This is so true, and unfortunately, I see this type of dialogue pretty often...
icanal: I love the case studies...

I find the clips to be most helpful!

Thank you for providing the clips and all of your contributions to the craft and our community.

Much continued success and good health to all!

I don't know if I'll every be able to attend your seminar; so thank you for storylogue.com

Also, thank you for confirming my suspicions in your last lesson - Whistler's mother is not a woman.

As always, McKee entertains, educates and captures me. His examples were provocative, and finally I understand the weak "on-the-nose" dialogue instead of characters coming alive through "trialogue." Thank you!

Subtext came alive for me in these 15 minutes. I can't thank you enough.
PennyJM: Got it!

Loved the example. Robert, your on-the-nose example was clear and funny. I pay attention to people's eyes...they said it all in the eye contact, too.
Miles: Viva Vino and Subtext!

A great example of trialogue expertly presented and discussed!  The subtext is pure genius...and, after Maya's performance, I had to park my glass of Merlot (I know, I'm bland)and take a cold shower.
Birddog: Subtext Subtext Subtext

This was a great lesson about the importances of subtext using a Triologue or a third element (instrument).  Having the video as an example to explain the concept was great along with Roberts humorous On-The-Nose rendition of the dialogue scene.

Thanks Robert,
Birddog

The scene illustrated the point fantastically. God, how painful it must have been to oxygenate the subtext of that; it was excruciating to listen to!

That's just the council I needed. I was today writing  a very wicked seduction using a Boston Bruins 1968 televised game and I was unsure, now I know why it was so sexy!

Thank you for recommending "The War of Art"...which I bought and read non-stop. Excellent.

The lessons are exemplary and inspirational. A great aid for writing and moving into and on with "story."

Amanda, too.
Geoff: Using examples as a classical rhetorical device
at Apr 12, 2010 - 10:06 AM
I'm not making an original comment, as rhetoricians have known for thousands of years that the enthymeme and the example are the tools of rhetoric, but I think Bob is most effective when he anchors his lesson with a concrete example like this one.

Particularly enjoyed the inserted clip to highlight the lesson's content.  I could watch Bob all day but it's good to break up the lessons a little.
