I write a backstory of the character and a childhood dream which helps me to determine what the character wants. It's a good start to creating the character and helps me to find the theme as well as the story follows the characters desire. I find if I don't at least start this process it is like Mr. McKee says, the character is not true and cannot speak in a scene.

Plot was getting in the way of what my protagonist really wants. After months of research, plotting and writing, I now know what he wants, and it fits perfectly into the jigsaw. Phew.

Your seminar here in Paris was an inciting incident for my writer's life. I feel its going to change. Hearing to your lesson in storylogue I realized that my play ADEUS DOUTOR (shown in France, Brasil and already translated into chinese) clearly demonstrates what you say about character's subconscious desire. I will send it to you when it is translated into english.
